MerleFest, one of the premier music festivals in the country, has been held annually since 1988 on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

MerleFest offers songwriters the opportunity to have their original songs heard by a panel of professional songwriters and others from the Nashville music industry by participating in the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest. Proceeds from the contest help support the WCC Chris Austin Memorial Scholarship. Since it started, the Chris Austin Scholarship has helped many students and awarded over $34,600.

Past winners include: Adrienne Young, Michael Reno Harrell, Gillian Welch, Martha Scanlan, David Via, Sam Quinn, Tift Merritt and Johnny Williams

The first place winner receives:

    -A performance on the cabin stage at MerleFest
    -$600 Cash
    -Two boxes of D’Addario strings
    -One-year subscription to Acoustic Guitar Magazine
